FD Police Sgt. Saves Six in Late Tuesday House Fire

The heroic acts of a Fort Dodge Police Sgt. are being celebrated after six people were rescued from a late Tuesday house fire. Police Chief Tim Carmody says Sgt Joel Lizer was on patrol and searching for suspects in a recent burglary when he saw smoke and flames coming from a home in the 700 block of 3rd Avenue North. After notifying the Webster County Communications Center, Lizer entered the home and woke up four adults and two children that were sleeping on the first floor. All six were evacuated safely. Fort Dodge Fire Chief Kent Hulett reported that no working smoke detectors were found inside the home. He added that Lizer's actions likely saved the lives of the six residents and prevented firefighters from further risk and injury.
