The City of Fort Dodge has seen an improving trend in the number of criminal incidents in the last decade. According to numbers provided by the Fort Dodge Police Department, there were over 3,700 reported incidents in 2013, compared to over 5,400 in 2008 and almost 5,900 in 2003. Police Chief Tim Carmody says hard data can be good and bad, because while it shows overall improvement, there are still numbers of victims. Also, while a particular offense category may show an increase from year to year, Carmody says it could mean more people are choosing to report crimes than in years past. Regardless, Carmody says the improvement is a reflection on more than just law enforcement:
Among personal crime figures, there were 9 less rape cases in 2013 than in 2012, while there were 7 more domestic assault reports. One area Carmody pointed to as a concern was reported arsons, which there were 13 of in 2013 and double digit reports since 2009.
