FD Woman Convicted in Insurance Fraud Scheme

A Fort Dodge woman was convicted in a conspiracy of using arson to collect over $78,000 in insurance money. The U.S. Attorney’s Office says 67 year-old Shirley Weimer pleaded guilty to a single count of conspiracy to knowingly use fire to commit wire fraud. Weimer admitted to recruiting a tenant, Lisa Young, to burn down a home she owned and promised Young $10,000 of the insurance money. The fire occurred on March 2 of 2009 at 20458 230th Street in Fort Dodge. Weimer also recruited Gerald Straight and Ashley Straight in the conspiracy. Weimer, who is waiting to be sentenced, faces 120 months in prison. Young, Ashley Straight, and Gerald Straight are all scheduled to be sentenced this month, as well.
