Officials in northern Iowa continue to investigate a medical helicopter crash that left three people dead. Last night at around 9:00pm, a medical helicopter crashed and burst into flames just north of Ventura in Cerro Gordo county. The helicopter was affiliated with Mercy Medical Center and was headed to Emmetsburg to pick up a patient. Authorities say nurse Shelly Lair-Langenbaum, paramedic Russell Piehl, and pilot Gene Grell were the three victims Officials with MedTrans, the company that manages the chopper, said it was new as of April 2011 and was up to date with scheduled maintenance. Officials with the Federal Aviation Administration are handling the investigation.
