Firing Report of Hedlund, Key Witness, Will Be Sealed During Murder Trial
A district judge says an internal report detailing the firing of an Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation agent and key witness will not be disclosed during an upcoming murder trial. Judge Kurt Wilke ruled Friday that the report on former agent Larry Hedlund has no information that defense lawyers could use to discredit him during the first-degree murder trial of Derrick McElroy. McElroy is charged with murder in the death of 19-year-old Brandyn Preston. Hedlund oversaw an investigation that led to McElroy's arrest. Hedlund's firing was at the center of a scandal with Governor Terry Branstad's administration last year. He was removed from duty days after pursuing the governor's speeding state SUV. Hedlund claims retaliation.
