Fort Dodge Man Accused of Assaut on Police Officer
The Fort Dodge man is in custody after allegedly assaulting a police officer and fleeing the scene of a traffic stop. Fort Dodge Police Chief Tim Carmody says 40 year-old Mark Mendenhall is facing charges of assault on a peace officer and interference with official acts. he is also being held on an outstanding felony warrant for violation of parole. At 3:40 Friday afternoon, Mendenhall was reportedly a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped by officer Chris Weiland at the intersection of 6th Avenue South and 15th Street. Mendenhall allegedly provided a false identity, and then struggled with officer Weiland and fled the scene on foot. Later in the evening, Mendenhall was apprehended in the 600 block of South 15th Street. Weiland was treated for a shoulder injury and released from UnityPoint Health-Trinity.
