Governor Brandstad Commutes Juvenile Sentences

Governor Terry Branstad recently converted the life sentences of 38 Iowa juveniles to 60 years. The move follows a ruling by the Supreme Court that tossed out life sentences for young offenders. Many juveniles are appealing the commutation, saying that it still equates to life in prison. The Iowa court agreed that 60 years is too long and upheld a judge's resentence of 25 years. In two other juvenile cases, the justices overturned lengthy sentences and ordered resentencing. The court ruled that the Supreme Court's ruling could be applied retroactively to past cases in Iowa.
