Gowrie Sex Offender Had Access to Elementary Students
An area school district has voiced concerns after a registered sex-offender had access to students during a recent visit to a nursing home. The Des Moines Register says 79-year-old John Steinkamp regularly is in the audience when schoolchildren entertain at his nursing home in Gowrie. Steinkamp can't live within 2,000 feet of an Iowa school, but he's been able to attend the shows and visit with the kids. Steinkamp has been convicted three times for lascivious acts with children, most recently in 2008. Superintendent Mark Egli says his Gowrie district wasn't told Steinkamp was at the home. Egli says five school employees accompanied the 38 children on a visit three weeks ago.
