Juvenile Convicted in 1988 Ames Murder Will be Resentenced
An Iowa woman who was given life in prison when she was a juvenile is getting resentenced. a judge will resentence 43-year-old Yvette Louisell on Friday in Story County District Court. A jury convicted Louisell in 1988 of first-degree murder in the stabbing death of 40-year-old Keith Stilwell, of Ames. She was 17 when she stabbed him, and began serving her sentence at 18. Louisell met Stilwel while both were taking classes at Iowa State University. She said he tried to sexually assault her, and claimed self-defense at her trial. The resentencing follows an Iowa Supreme Court decision last summer that ruled mandatory life sentences for juveniles were illegal.
