The trial for a Fort Dodge man charged in a shooting that ultimately left a man dead is set to begin tomorrow. 28 year-old Derrick McElroy will stand trial on a charge of first-degree murder, after he allegedly shot then-19 year-old Brandyn Preston in May of 2011. As a result of the incident, Preston was paralyzed from the shoulders down and ultimately died in January of 2012. Fort Dodge police say his death was caused by the shooting. McElroy has been held in the Webster County Jail since he was arrested in July of 2012. If convicted, he faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole.
