Three-Alarm Fire Destroys Downtown DSM Landmark

A three-alarm overnight fire has destroyed a landmark building in downtown Des Moines. Shortly before 1:00am Saturday, fire crews were dispatched to 7th and Walnut Streets, the site of the former Younkers department store. Crews found heavy smoke and the upper floors completely engulfed upon arrival, and surrounding buildings have been damaged by falling debris and smoke as well. Crews were still on the scene at 7:00am pouring water on the building. A cause of the fire has not been determined at this time. The Younkers building was closed in 2005, but was in the process of being renovated into 120 apartments and retail space.
