Waterloo Can't Sell Blighted Homes; Will Demolish
Waterloo officials are giving up on efforts to sell some blighted homes, and they'll now be demolished. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports the City Council on Monday canceled plans to sell one house after no one submitted a bid to buy and renovate it. There also were no bids last week for a similar structure. Chris Western, a city planner, says both houses will be demolished. Waterloo has used court orders to acquire nearly 100 abandoned houses. Most are torn down at taxpayer expense. Those costs prompted the city to offer some houses for sale and avoid demolition. The effort has succeeded with several homes, but not lately.
