DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) _ The committee appointed by the state Republican Party to review Iowa caucus procedures is making several recommendations to avoid future embarrassment.
The GOP named Mitt Romney winner of the Jan. 3 caucuses but two weeks later certified Rick Santorum as the winner. The first presidential contest in the nation is closely watched and the Republican party was heavily criticized for caucus errors.
To help improve the process, Republicans appointed a Caucus Review Committee. At Monday's meeting in Sioux City the group recommended additions to the party's bylaws.
They include holding off on naming a winner when the margin of difference in the top two candidates is 1 percent or less.
The group also recommends shortening the certification process to 72 hours to get results out before the New Hampshire primary.
