Fire officials say the fire at the home started at about 6 a.m.
Investigators said Leland Johnson, 4, was trapped in an upstairs bedroom.
Firefighters were able to get to the boy and he was rushed to Mercy hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The boy's mother and two other children were able to get out of the home safely.
A neighbor said they were wakened by the mother screaming in the street.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
