Fort Dodge School Board Approves Budget, Staff Reductions
The Fort Dodge Community School Board approved a series of reductions while also approving the 2013-14 budget yesterday. Facing a $2 million dollar shortfall, the board approved staff reductions presented by Superintendent Doug Van Zyl, which would save around $1.3 million. Positions being eliminated include teacher-librarians, paraeducators, and one middle school nurse. Van Zyl says while reductions are never easy, the district's level of service should remain the same:
Currently, the district is budgeted to receive a 2% allowable growth from the state. Van Zyl says should the state approve zero percent allowable growth, that would result in the loss of an additional $250,000.
