A 450-acre section of Des Moines is about to become the busiest spot in Iowa. The Iowa State Fair will open Thursday at its longtime east Des Moines location for an 11-day run expected to draw more than 1 million visitors. All those people will find nearly 200 food stands, five stages for free entertainment and thousands of animals. As always, the Butter Cow will be on hand, and there will be plenty of food items including a shrimp corndog and bacon-wrapped riblet on a stick. Fair buildings open at 9 a.m. each day and the midway starts up at 10 a.m. Admission is free for children 5 and younger; $5 for ages 6 to 11; and $11 for others.
