A split Fort Dodge City Council voted to approve the first reading of an amended animal control ordinance. The only change to the ordinance was to allow dog leashes to be up to 16 feet long; the original version allowed for a six-foot leash. While the majority was in favor of the change, councilmen Kim Alstott, Andy Fritz, and Dave Flattery voted against the ordinance because of a requirement that dogs must be restrained on private property. Alstott said that law goes above and beyond the city's responsibility. The ordinance would need to be approved twice more before becoming law.
