(LOS ANGELES) -- After topping the box office last weekend -- even setting an opening-day record for September by earning a shade over $20 million in its first day of release -- Insidious is getting a part three.
Insidious: Chapter 2 grossed a total of $41 million over the weekend, more than triple what the first film collected in its debut weekend two years ago. Variety reports Chapter 2's success has prompted the film's producers to order a third installment.
Screenwriter Leigh Whannell wrote the first two Insidious films and Variety reports he's been hired to pen a third chapter.
In the first Insidious, the Lambert family faces demons after their son becomes possessed. Insidious: Chapter 2 has the family moving into a new house, but eventually realizing that they can't shake the demons that haunted them. The film series stars Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne.
