UnityPoint Health Systems Investigating Medical Records Breach
The UnityPoint Health System is investigating a security breach in its electronic medical record system. UnityPoint officials say the breach was noticed during a regular audit on August 8, and determined the personal information of approximately 1800 hospital patients across the system were at risk. Information that may have been accessed included names, home addresses, medical and health insurance account numbers, and health information. In addition, social security numbers and drivers license numbers of a small portion of those impacted could have been viewed. Locally, there were 38 people affected in the region. UnityPoint has sent letters to all affected patients and is offering a credit monitoring product to living adults and families of minors affected. It is believed a third-party employee gained access to the EMR system by the password of people with access to the system. A law enforcement investigation is ongoing.
