Ankeny Father Sentenced in Daughter's Shooting Death
An Ankeny man convicted of shooting his teenage daughter has been sentenced to five years in prison. 51-year-old Scott Merle Hazelbaker received the sentence Thursday in connection with the June death of 18-year-old Emily Hazelbaker. Scott Hazelbaker pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in September as part of a plea agreement that dropped a charge of assault without intent causing injury. Hazelbaker says he thought his gun's safety was on when he pointed the weapon at his daughter. Ankeny police and Hazelbaker's attorneys have called the shooting accidental.
