A local state representative was recently elected to lead a national nonpartisan group. Women in Government, a national organization of women state legislators, announced last week that Fort Dodge's Helen Miller was elected to serve as its 2014 chairwoman. The Washington, D.C. group has about 1,800 members. According to a news release, Miller's duties will be to guide the direction of the organization in order to determine issues of importance to state legislatures. In a statement, Women in Government president Marjorie Maginn says they are excited that Miller "will continue to share her leadership skills with other women policymakers throughout the country".
