Medical Marijuana, Abortion Proposals Won't Advance This Legislative Session

Several controversial bills appear to be dead after failing to meet a legislative deadline in the Iowa Legislature this week. Bills on issues such as medical marijuana, abortion and gun rights did not meet the requirements to move forward. A proposal on medical marijuana would have legalized marijuana usage for some people with chronic conditions under oversight from the state. A bill on abortion lawsuits would make it easier for women to later sue doctors who performed an abortion on them. And a resolution seeking to amend the state constitution to add the right to bear arms lost steam as well. Today is the deadline for most bills to receive committee-level approval in the state House or Senate. But lawmakers completed their work for the week on Thursday.
