"Hybrid" Gas Tax Plan to be Presented to Iowa Legislature
What lobbying groups are calling a "hybrid" gas tax plan will be presented to the Iowa legislature this week. The Des Moines Register reports the new hybrid plan would reduce Iowa's gas tax to 16 cents per gallon and impose a new 5 percent wholesale tax on motor fuels. It is estimated the new plan would generate about $230 million dollars annually towards Iowa's infrastructure. In addition, it would have about the same impact as a 10 cent increase in the fuel tax. Earlier discussions in the legislature had centered on raising the gas tax by 10 cents over three years.
