FD Police Warn of Potential Check Scam



The Fort Dodge Police Department is warning residents of a potential scam in the area related to the express delivery of business checks. Chief Tim Carmody says a resident reported receiving a check from a business they had never done business with. The check was written from an unfamiliar bank and the return address did not match the bank or business address. Carmody says this is a new way that criminals are attempting to scam citizens, but adds there are certain precautions you can take:



 Carmody says often times, the check will come with a letter saying residents can receive additional checks if they send back a portion of the funds. You can report attempted scams like this to the Iowa Attorney General's website. If your believe your financial information is compromised, contact credit and banking institutions prior to local law enforcement.
