Publishers Clearinghouse Scam Not Going Away

Days after warning residents of a newer scam, the Fort Dodge Police Department says scammers claiming to be from Publishers Clearing House are stepping up their efforts. Police Chief Tim Carmody says fraudulent callers claiming to be from Publishers Clearing House have been contacting Webster County residents over the last month. They have been offering millions in cash or a new car in exchange for money to be wired to them. Last week, a resident reported that on a phone call, the scammer said a member of the Fort Dodge Police Department's command staff would verify the offer is real. Carmody says the department will not make calls to confirm the identity of a private vendor or an organization like Publisher's Clearing House.
