Today marks one year since the tragic events that rocked the city of Dayton and the state of Iowa. On May 20 of last year, authorities say Michael Klunder, a prior offender, kidnapped then 12 year-old Dezi Hughes and 15 year-old Kathlynn Shepard in Dayton while they were walking home from school. While Dezi was able to escape, Kathlynn was killed before Klunder committed suicide. Since then, Kathlynn's parents Michael and Denise Shepard have worked with Iowa lawmakers to strengthen the penalties for crimes against children. Today at 3:00pm, a brief ceremony will be held at Southeast Webster Grand High School in Burnside.
