The Fort Dodge city council met Monday night with a number of items on the agenda. One of the largest items up for discussion was the addition of the Crossroads mall to the Center City Urban Renewal Area in which passed the council with a unanimous vote. The move will make possible the usage of tax increment funding to support a future project on the site. Tax increment financing occurs when increased revenue from property taxes happens in a designated area and is set apart for reinvestment in that area. As of right now no specific project has been announced for the site. Last night’s vote comes on the heels of the council voting in July to add the Sears site to the Center City Urban Renewal Area. The Sears site is technically considered a different parcel of land and is under different ownership than Crossroads Mall.
