Area Baseball & Softball Report 6-22: St. Edmond Softball Pulls One Out, Gael Baseball Drops Heart Breaker, Dodger Baseball Gets Swept

Monday night was action packed on the diamond. One area softball team continued their momentum with some late game drama. One area baseball squad dropped a heart breaker, another one had a win slip away and was eventually victims of a two game sweep.

St. Edmond Softball pulled out a win in a thrill ride of an extra inning game. The Gaels got a win in 9 innings to complete the season sweep of Algona. The game was tied at 4 in the 9th when Ansley Oswald scored on a throwing error to give St. Edmond a 5-4 win. Ella Vratny went 8 innings in the circle and struck out 11. Kaili Henning worked the 9th and ended up the pitcher of record, getting the win. She also had four hits at the plate. Lauren Gibb went 3 for 4 and drove in a run for the Gaels. Algona’s Lillian Etherington did most of their damage on a 3 run homer in the 2nd. The Gaels are now 13-1 in their last 14 games. They also kept pace toward the top of the leader board in the North Central Conference regular season race.

St. Edmond Baseball fell to Algona 5-4 in a high drama affair. The Gaels led 4-3 after 6 innings. Algona got two in the top of the 7th and held St. Edmond in the bottom half to win it. Peyton Scott got a tough luck loss on the hill, as he had 11 K’s in the game. Devin Wirtz had two hits and Grant Heldorfer drove in two. Algona got two hits each from Cameron Rindone, Tyler Manske and Wyatt Streit, those three combined to drove in three runs as well. Fort Dodge Baseball dropped both games if their home double header to Ankeny Centennial. Dodgers fell in the opener 5-4 in 8 innings, after leading 4-2 in the 6th. In the nightcap, Centennial scored 5 in the 1st and went on to win it 12-6. Eli Elsbecker had two hits in game one, he drove in two in the second game. Dylan Zimmerman had two hits in the night cap. Fort Dodge hosts 4th ranked Ankeny for a twin bill on Wednesday. There’s a possibility that Ankeny will throw pitcher Brody Brecht. He is a high level prospect who throws in the mid to high 90’s. Brecht is almost a lock to be drafted in July’s MLB draft.

Newell-Fonda Baseball earned a win 4-0 over Southeast Valley on Monday night. The Mustangs were able to keep pace in the race for tops in the conference.

#1 Newell-Fonda Softball blanked SE Valley 10-0 in 5 innings. The Mustangs turned heads at the Fort Dodge Invitational this past weekend, when they were highly competitive against  quality 5A competition.

Pocahontas Area got a baseball and softball sweep of Manson NW Webster. Both Pocahontas teams pulled out one run wins. Softball won 6-5 and baseball got a 7-6 win.
