Area Baseball Teams Win District Titles, Look To Punch State Tickets
Baseball programs all over Iowa, are fighting it out in the postseason on the “Journey To The State Tourney.” Teams around North Central Iowa met over the weekend in District Title games with a chance to advance to Sub-State.
In 1A on Saturday, Newell-Fonda claimed a District Title by downing Bishop Garrigan 7-2. The game was tied at 2, after 3. The Mustangs got three in the 5th and two in the 6th. They held Garrigan scoreless after the 3rd. Hunter Christansen had two hits and scored twice for Newell-Fonda, Gabe Sievers drove in two runs. Newell-Fonda will take on Remsen St. Mary’s on Tuesday night with a trip to State on the line.
In another 1A District Final, Coon Rapids-Bayard dropped Ogden 7-2. The game was tied at 1 until Coon Rapids took control in the 3rd, putting up a 5 spot. They then led 6-1, they added one in the 4th and Ogden got one in the 5th. For Coon Rapids-Bayard, Josh Ramirez had 3 hits including a homer. He drove in three and scored twice as well. Coon Rapids-Bayard can punch their ticket to State with a win Tuesday night over Grundy Center.
Class 2A’s #1 Roland-Story advanced after earning a 3-0 win over South Hamilton. The Norsemen scored twice in the 3rd and once in the 5th. Roland-Story meets New Hampton on Tuesday night for a trip to State.
Also in 2A, Pocahontas Area fell 11-0 to Alta-Aurelia. The Warriors pounded out 14 hits. They scored one in the 2nd, two in the 3rd, five in the 5th and three in the 6th. Pocahontas Area was limited to 1 hit in the game, Alta-Aurelia got 3 hits and two RBI’s from Teagan Meyer and his teammate Oliver Peterson added two two hits and drove in three. Alta-Aurelia meets two time defending State Champs Van Meter on Tuesday for a trip to State.
