The battle over the bottle bill that has been on the books in Iowa for decades will head to court in 2021. The Iowa Grocery Industry Association or IGIA is calling for the bill to be reevaluated. The IGIA is suing the Iowa Dept. Of Natural Resources, after the DNR rejected a petition on the bill. The suit will go through Polk County District Court. The part of the pill being challenged is the “convenience standard”,which mandates grocery stores redeem the empty bottles if their is not a redemption center within a 10 minute drive. The IGIA asserts that conveniences exist now that didn’t when the bill was in-acted. Proponents of the bill say that the bottle bill as it is currently written has helped Iowa maintain a top 5 recycling ranking among U.S. states. The court case is set to begin January 29th.
