Bishop Garrigan is in the Semifinals of Class 1A for the 1st time since Richard Nixon was in office, it was 1973 last time the Golden Bears made it this far. They advanced after a Quarterfinal win where they held off a good Springville team 55-52. Coaches will tell you the key to a postseason run in basketball is finding ways to win on nights you don’t play your best. Bishop Garrigan did that against Springville on the back of its inside game they were +12 in points in the paint and had a decided advantage on the offensive glass. Big man Angelo Winkel had 22 points and 14 boards in the Springville win. They will face West Fork-Sheffield Wednesday afternoon for a spot in the 1A State Championship. West Fork-Sheffield edged Remsen- St. Mary’s 55-53 to advance to the Semifinals. While Bishop Garrigan has had a decided size advantage most of the year with 4 players who are 6ft 4 or taller , West Fork- Sheffield has 4 players who are 6ft 5. However they still don’t have anyone who can match the size of Bishop Garrigan’s Angelo Winkel at 6ft 9.
In the Class 4A Quarterfinals Tuesday night, CIML members carried the banner for the league. 4 seed Waukee advanced after 1 58-50 win over North Scott. Waukee’s D-1 prospects Tucker Devries and Payton Sandfort came up big combining for 41 of the team’s 58. Waukee will be in the Semifinals Thursday night taking on Ankeny Centennial. The Jaguars edged Davenport North 53-51 in Tuesday’s other 4A Quarterfinal game. Surprisingly , Centennial was outrebounded and outscored in the paint against Davenport North. Ankeny Centennial sports two big men Micah Johnson who is 6ft 7 and Cody Mccullough who is 6ft 8 that both are D-2 prospects. Ankeny Centennial took the regular season match up at Waukee 78-70 on January 28th. The Class 4A Quarterfinals continue Wednesday with 6 seed Ankeny taking on 3 seed Iowa City West and 7 seed Dowling Catholic battles 2 seed Cedar Falls. If Ankeny and Dowling can both pull the upset then the Class 4A Final 4 will be an all CIML affair. The CIML is guaranteed at least one team in the title game at this point.
