Boys State Tourney: Bishop Garrigan Falls In 1A Finals, All CIML Final in 4A

For the Finals the IHSAA mandated that only essential staff, coaches, players, credentialed media and a limited number of fans were allowed in as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Nonetheless, Bishop Garrigan fell just one game short of it’s first ever state title in boys hoops. The Golden Bears fell to Wapsie Valley 65-53. Garrigan show just 4 of 17 from 3 point range in the game. Wapsie Valley had 3 players in double figures led by a game high 21 from Kiks Rosengarten who also grabbed 15 boards. Bishop Garrigan was led by Marcus Plathe with a team 16, big man Angelo Winkel had another double-double 15 points and 12 boards. Angelo had a double-double in every game of the state tourney. Wapsie Valley the 8 seed defeated #1 seed Lake Mills, #4 seed Montezuma, and #2 seed Bishop Garrigan in route to a “Cinderella” run that is closest thing we are going to see to that this March.

In 4A the finals are set for Friday night and will be an all CIML final. Waukee will meet Ankeny for the big trophy after they both advanced in the Semifinals. #4 seed Waukee defeated Ankeny Centennial 680-62  in the Semi’s avenging a regular season loss to the Jaguars. Ankeny Centennial held Waukee without a field goal in the final 4 minutes but still couldn’t get over the hump. D-1 prospect Payton Sandfort led Waukee with a game high 20 points he also had 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Fellow D-1 prospect Tucker Devries added 17 and 7 for Waukee. Ankeny Centennial big man duo Cody Mccullough and Micah Johnson combined for 37 points and 12 boards. #6 seed Ankeny High got to the title game after beating defending champ #2 seed Cedar Falls 71-57 in the Semifinals. Ankeny never trailed in the game and came out on fire taking a 27-9 lead after the 1st. Ankeny shot over 50% from 3 point range in the game. 3 Hawks in double figures Jordan Kumm with a game high 18, Jaxon Smith added 17. The final will be a culmination of a dominating season by CIML teams as 4 made the tournament, 3 made the Semifinals, 2 in the Finals, but only one can be the “Kings Of Iowa Basketball”.
