Day 1 at the 2021 State Wrestling Tournament was action packed. Theresa and Tom Hildreth brought you all the action from the 1A and 3A portions of the tournament on “Sunny” 99.7 and here on our website. Alpha Media Sports is not doing broadcast coverage of the 2A portion of the tournament. However, we have the results from the night session on Thursday which featured Class 2A’s best and brightest from the area.
In Class 3A on Thursday Afternoon, Fort Dodge was nothing short of spectacular. After the first day, 8 of the Dodger qualifiers remained in the tournament. 7 Fort Dodge wrestlers advanced to the Quarterfinals on the Championship side of the bracket. Dru Ayala, Max Bishop, Lane Cowell, Drake Ayala, Deryzon Phillips, Kody Cook, Ben Egli all won to advance to the Quarterfinals. Demarion Ross is still in the tournament after he lost his opener and won his wrestle back.
In Class 1A Thursday morning, West Bend Mallard’s Donavan Hanson won his opener at 113. Ryan Duckett of St. Edmond, is still in it after losing the opener but won his wrestle back at 120. Pocahontas Area’s Tyce Ruffridge won his wrestle back to stay in the tournament. Kellen Smith of West Hancock won his opener at 120 to advance to Quarterfinals. Bryer Subject at 160 won in OT by decision to advance. South Central Calhoun’s Blake Mcalister won his opener by pin at 170. Matt Francis of West Hancock at 195 won his opener to advance. At 220, Cole Kelly of West Hancock beat Jayden Soard of South Central Calhoun. Soard won his wrestle back to stay alive. Dane Johnson of Pocahontas Area’s won his opener to advance at 285.
Thursday Night class 2A took center stage with several area wrestlers in action. Aaron Graves of Southeast Valley won his opener at 285 to adavnce. His teammate Caelan Oakes at 113, lost his 1st match but won his wrestle back. Reington Hanson, Garret Seaba, Reed Abbas, and Kain Nelson of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows all got wins to advance to the Quarterfinals. Humboldt’s Jayden Gargano and Jase Goodell both lost twice on Thursday and were eliminated. Webster City’s Carson Doolittle won at 106 to advance. His teammate, Cam Phetxoumphone advanced after a pin at 113.
