Fort Dodge Community and Law Enforcement Come Together to Combat Crime

A town hall meeting was held Thursday night in Fort Dodge with one goal in mind, making the community a safer one.

The meeting was held four blocks from the site of the murder of an 18 year old man in broad daylight that occurred in early May, the event, the first of a month that ended with two other shooting deaths within the city limits.

Fort Dodge Police Chief Dennis Quinn spoke with Alpha Media’s Mike Devine about how law enforcement addresses such events and he says communication and the public’s help can go a long way in helping to solve crime.

“I want to bring the community together as much as we can. Inform people as much as we can. I know there’s frustration sometimes,” Quinn said.  When people ask, “Why does it take a month, why does it take two months to solve these?” Quinn said people would be surprised by the amount of time it takes to solve a case. “Hundreds, sometimes thousands of hours that we put into these things to try to get these terrible things resolved.”

Chief Quinn, alongside Webster County Sheriff Luke Fleener, spoke with a room full of concerned citizens at the First Presbyterian Church about how the community can really make a difference.

“If we can work together closely as a community, the crimes that we see now may be detered,” Fleener said.

Randy Kuhlman and the Fort Dodge Community Foundation spearheaded the newly formed safe coalition which hosted Thursday night’s event.

Kuhlman says crime is not just a law enforcement problem, it is a community issue.

“If we can get the community engaged we’re confident that we can see real progress on making Fort Dodge a safer place to live,” Kuhlman said.

He said there will be a financial boost for local crime relief efforts as the Fort Dodge Community Foundation and Webster County Sheriff’s Office has received a 200-thousand dollar federal grant.
