Thursday, a historic moment will happen at the Fort Dodge Senior High School, as for the first time a girls wrestling team will take to the mat in the first week of statewide competition

Girls wrestling was sanctioned for the 2022-2023 school year throughout the state of Iowa and is something Dodger Head Coach Jon Koening says has been developing nicely:

“If you talk to anybody who’s from Fort Dodge, one of the topics that gets brought up is the tradition of wrestling. I think a lot of the girls who have given this a shot for the first time have that in the back of their minds that they’re learning from some of the best and practicing with some of the best and they are taking that and using that confidence to get better and better each day.”

This is the first week of competition through the state and Koening says people can expect a lot of excitement out of the home season opener

There are wrestlers from St. Edmond and Webster City on the Fort Dodge team and for the first meet Koenig says teams will be coming from Humboldt, Eagle Grove, Algona, Boone Raccoon River Wrestling

North Union, East Sac, DM Public Schools for the competition beginning at the senior high school at 5:30 pm
