A Fort Dodge man will spend the rest of his life behind bars. On Monday, 45 year old Justin Hurdel was sentenced to life without parole after being convicted of murder earlier this year. Hurdel was convicted of killing his estranged wife Maggie Flint in August of 2020.
Hurdel shot and killed Flint after an argument at a residence in Fort Dodge. During the trial, Hurdel maintained that he accidentally shot Flint and intended to shoot himself in front of her instead.
After shooting Flint, Hurdel did in fact shoot himself and suffered facial injuries from the gunshot wound. He was arrested in August 2020, after a manhunt of over 16 hours following the incident.
The family of Maggie Flint was in the courtroom on Monday to deliver victim impact statements.
