Fort Dodge Middle School Head Principal Named
The Fort Dodge Community School District has named long-time educator Shawn Chesteen head principal of the Fort Dodge Middle School, pending board approval.
For the past nine years, Chesteen has served as the middle school principal in the Sioux City North School District, which is home to over 1,100 students in grades 6-8. Prior to holding that position, Chesteen spent five years as an assistant high school principal at Sioux City North.
Chesteen is a “student-centered administrator that concentrates on building relationships with all members of the organization,” according to FDCSD superintendent Josh Porter.
“We are excited for Mr. Chesteen to join our team,” Porter said. “His experience and skill set will be instrumental as we move forward in cultivating a continued strong climate and culture at the Fort Dodge Middle School. We feel his personality and enthusiasm will serve our district well.
“We are very fortunate to have Mr. Chesteen on board. He brings a lot of positive energy to the table. He has the ability to get along with everyone, but still manage a building to the best of his ability. He is looking forward to getting started and learning all about our kids, families, and community – and why being a Dodger is a special experience for leaders, educators, and children.”
“It will be an honor and privilege to be a part of the FDCSD,” Chesteen said. “I look forward to working with all of you. I’m committed to doing the best I can to help the district achieve the goals that are set out to meet.
“Thank you again (for the opportunity)…I can’t wait to be a part of a great district.”
Prior to joining the Sioux City North district, Chesteen was a middle school teacher for 10 years, with stops at Dunnellon Middle School in Florida; Woodrow Wilson Middle School in Sioux City; and West Middle School in Sioux City. Chesteen has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Westmar University, where he was an All-American football player; a Master of Arts in Education Administration from the University of South Dakota; and an Education Specialist Degree in Educational Administration with a superintendent endorsement from USD.
Chesteen will be replacing Aaron Davidson, who was the FDMS principal for four years. Davidson has moved into the FDCSD’s executive director of educational services, where he will serve under Porter’s direction.
The Fort Dodge Middle School serves approximately 750 students in grades 6-8.
The next FDCSD board meeting is July 24; after approval, Chesteen’s first official day on the job will be July 25.
