Fort Dodge Police Release Update and Further Details on Saturday Officer Involved Shooting

Police have identified the man who died following an officer involved shooting that took place Saturday morning in Fort Dodge.

According to a release from the Fort Dodge Police Department, 24 year old Tyler Stansberry of Fort Dodge died following an incident at 1525 4th Ave. South that began after a call was made to law enforcement in regards to an individual who was exhibiting out of control behavior which allegedly included injuring a dog. Further information was provided to dispatch that it was unknown if the subject was in possession of weapons.

According to the Fort Dodge Police Department, officers arriving on the scene entered the residence and encountered a man, later identified as Stansberry, and according to the report was armed with two knives and charged at the officers.

As a result, an officer discharged a firearm resulting in Stansberry’s death.

Officers involved in the incident have been placed on Critical Incident Leave while the investigation by the Iowa Division of Critical Investigations continues.

Per protocol, their names will not be released prior to being interviewed by the DCI.
