“From The Mat” Area Wrestling Report From The Weekend

It was a busy weekend for area wrestling teams, as they begin to gear up for the postseason. For the area 1A teams, the postseason begins this Saturday Feb. 6th. This past weekend featured Fort Dodge hosting the CIML Iowa Invitational, South Central Calhoun hosting a dual tournament and East Sac County competing in the Audubon Wheeler Invitational.

On Friday, Fort Dodge hosted the CIML Iowa Invitational which featured a total of 6 teams. The 4th ranked Dodgers finished 2nd as a team. Fort Dodge scored 199 and Ankeny Centennial won the event with just over 206. Dodgers had five wrestlers take gold in their respective weight classes, Dru Ayala at 106, Max Bishop at 113, Lane Cowell at 120, Drake Ayala at 126 and Kody Cook at 160. Dreyzon Phillip took home silver at 145 and Ben Egli took silver at 182 for Fort Dodge. Damarion Ross had a bronze finish at 138. Cowell’s win in the finals means he now needs just five more wins to get 100 for his career. Dodgers are back at it for Senior Night Tuesday hosting Des Moines- Lincoln.

Saturday, area teams were in action at South Central Calhoun for a dual tournament. The host team won the gold going 5-0 on the day. Manson NW Webster was in action, finishing 2nd going 4-1. Their lone loss was to South Central Calhoun 54-30. St. Edmond got a win on the day, defeating Lawton-Bronson 30-29. St. Edmond’s Tyler and Zach Rossmanith, and Grant Webster had wins by pin. Also for St. Edmond, Ronnie Orress had 5 wins on the day, Ryan Duckett had three and Emiliano Guillen had a win. St. Edmond and South Central Calhoun will be in action at the 1A Sectionals in Ogden on Saturday. Manson NW Webster is hosting a 1A Sectional on Saturday. You can hear the Ogden Sectional on 105-9 FM and here on our website starting at noon. The Manson Sectional will air on 99.7 FM and here on our website Saturday starting at noon.

East Sac County finished 4th in the  Audubon Wheeler Invitational Tournament on Saturday.  Top finishers for the Raiders were Charlie Veit (120) & Justin Rupnow (285) each placing 1st.  Finishing 2nd in their weight classes were:  Garrett Ortner (113), Wyatt Thorpe (126) and Garrett Quirk (170).  East Sac County will also be in the 1A Sectional at Ogden this Saturday.
