This past weekend was another busy one for high school wrestling teams around the area. The Fort Dodge wrestling team claimed their 5th straight team championship at the Don Miller Invitational. The Dodgers scored over 270 points, Ankeny Centennial was 2nd with just under 240 and Emmetsburg 3rd with just under 144. The Dodgers had a strong showing placing 9 wrestlers in the finals and had 6 wrestlers win titles in their respective weight classes. Lane Cowell claimed the title at 113, the nation’s top ranked 120 pound wrestler Drake Ayala won his weight class as well. Carson Taylor won the title at 126, Brooks Cowell at 132,Drezyon Phillips at 138 and Levi Egli at 195. Brandon Mills, Kody Cokk and Austin Lee all finished 2nd for the Dodgers in their respective weight classes. Ayala won his 3rd straight Miller Invitational title and improved his career record to 106-2 , he was named the meet’s most outstanding wrestler. In the girls division of the tournament Dodger Alexis Ross won the 132-138 class. For Ross it was her 2nd straight tournament title as she took the gold in the Waverly girls tournament last weekend. St. Edmond wrestler Elly Berry finished 2nd in the 122-126 pound class. Humboldt had 3 girls win titles in the tournament. Over 50 girls participated in the invitational.
Manson NW Webster wrestling finished 2nd at the Tiger-Knight Invitational in Carroll. Carroll finished 3rd, Pocahontas Area 5th, Greene County 6th and St. Edmond 10th. Manson NW Webster’s John Schuttler won the title at 195. St. Edmond wrestler Ryan Duckett won the 113 pound division going 5-0 on the day. Gales freshmen Ronnie Orres finished 3rd at 106. Pocahontas Area’s Tyce Ruffridge won the 106 pound division and improved his season record to 16-2.
