Girls State Tourney:  Newell-Fonda Wins 52 straight, Crooks Leads Garrigan, West Hancock Cruises

 

The 2020 Iowa Girls Basketball Tournament is now in full swing with the Quarterfinals complete for every class. West Hancock who was the 1A State Runner Up last year is now in 2A and is picking up where they left off. They opened their state tourney appearance as the 2 seed  and cruised to a win 57-31 over 7 seed Logan-Magnolia on Wednesday. They will take on 3 seed North Linn on Friday at 11:45 in the Semifinals. Class 1A yesterday saw a couple area teams  Newell-Fonda and Bishop Garrigan in action. Newell-Fonda won State in 2019 and is the 1 seed this year. They were dominant in a 77-47 win over 8 seed St. Albert in the Quarterfinals. Newell-Fonda has now won 52 games in a row and 78-1 in the last 3 seasons. They will take on St. Ansgar on Friday at 1:30 in the Semifinals. Freshman Audi Crooks led Bishop Garrigan to a Quarterfinal win on Thursday. Bishop Garrigan is the 3 seed and they downed Martendale- St. Mary’s 55-40. Crooks had a double-double of 25 points and 14 boards. Bishop Garrigan is now 24-1 and will face 2 seed Marquette Catholic who also is 24-1 in the Semifinals Friday. Both Newell-Fonda and Bishop Garrigan are one win away from a showdown with each other on Saturday for the State Championship
