High School Football Area Playoff Qualifiers
There will be 2 playoff games on the Alpha Media family of stations Friday. There is a total 5 of teams from the listening area who will be making playoff appearances. The road to the UNI dome now begins with the herd thinned down to just 16 teams per enrollment class. Below is a look at the area matchups starting with the two that we have carried and covered all season.
All Games
92.1 FM- (4A) Fort Dodge at Cedar Rapids Kennedy. Pregame at 6:45 PM , 7 PM kick.
The Dodgers punched their playoff ticket with a win in week 9 at home over Marshalltown 21-17. The defense would come up big forcing several turnovers. LB Shane Halligan with a fumble recovery and a pick 6 that gave the Dodgers their largest lead of the night. The Dodgers will be on the road playing Cedar Rapids Kennedy. Kennedy is the 5 seed in the 16 team field and is 8-1. The Dodgers are the 11 seed with a 6-3 record. Here’s is the Halligan pick 6 play from the 2nd half.
105. 9 FM- (1A) South Central Calhoun hosts Mount Ayr. 6:45 PM pregame, 7 Pm kick. Join the Tutans broadcast team of veteran area sportscasters Mark Williamson and Brian Peters on the call. The Titans are 9-0 after beating Pocahontas 34-0 in the regular season finale and became district champions with the win. The Titans defense has been stellar all year allowing just 34 total pints, less than 4 per game. The Titans are the 6th seed at 9-0 hosting the 12 seed Mount Ayr at 7-2.
Other area teams that are making playoff appearances include Greene County (2A), Algona (2A), and IKM- Manning (A). Greene County is 8-1 after a loss to OABCIG in a week 9 game that decided the district title. Greene County will be on the road after a stellar year and they are one of a rare number of better seeded teams that are on the road around the state in round 1. Travel is taken into effect in playoff match ups and also district champions get priority on hosting a 1st round game. Greene County will take on 9th seeded Des Moines Christian also 8-1 on year but were the champions of their district.
Algona ran the table in the regular season going 9-0, they are at home hosting CLGLR in the 1st round of the playoffs. Algona became district champs last week beating Southeast Valley and they are the seed, CLGLR is the 16 seed.
IKM Manning finished the regular season at 6-3 and are district champions. They are the 13 seed and will be on the road taking on the the 1 seed West Hancock in the 1st round.
