The Iowa High School Football Semifinals were this weekend and we are now down to two teams in each class that will face off this week in the championship games. Class 4 A took center stage Friday night at the UNI Dome. What everybody was expecting played out as WDM-Valley disposed of Bettendorf 35-7 and Dowling Catholic blew past Cedar Rapids Kennedy 42-6. Both of those teams looked a notch above everybody else in the semi’s and have looked that way all year. Valley is unbeaten on the season, Dowling has one loss. Dowling will look to avenge that loss which was the hands of Valley in week 2. Those two powerhouses will square off on Friday at 7 PM at The Dome for the 4A state title.

Class 1A and 2A had their semifinals on Saturday. In Class 2A , Alogona fell to OABCIG 41-32. OABCIG outscored Algona in the 2nd half 27 to 12 in route to the win. Algona finishes their season at 12-1 with a district championship. Coach Andy Jacobson and his Algona squad had a tremendous run and were the last hope for the local area to produce a state championship team. OABCIG will move on led by QB Cooper Dejean who is 5th in Iowa in TD passes, and had 37 of them coming into the Algona game. Waukon the #1 seed in 2A ended the “cinderella” run for Williamsburg 32-14 in the other semifinal. OABCIG will take on Waukon Friday at 1 PM for the Class 2A state title.

In Class 1A #1 seed Van Meter had no trouble with Regina-Iowa City downing them 49-17. West Lyon edged out West Sioux 26-21. That was considered somewhat of a surprise by pundits around the state. Due to West Sioux being led by QB Hunter Dekkers who committed to Iowa State over Purdue, Indiana and Kansas State. Van Meter will meet West Lyon Friday at 10 AM for the Class 1A state title.
