HS Hoop Report From 1-12: Titan Girls Drop Heart Breaker, Titan Boys Cruise, Dodgers Swept On Road
Tuesday saw teams from the area in action and produced an “instant classic” of an area battle between two girls teams. Fort Dodge had the unenviable task of going on the road to tangle with Ankeny Centennial . South Central Calhoun was at home hosting Humboldt in games between two schools less than an hour apart.
On 105-9 “The Beach” South Central Calhoun got a split with Humboldt. The girls game would be an overtime thrill ride and Humboldt would edge out the win. The game was nip and tuck all night and went to OT tied at 57. SCC would lead 67-66 in closing seconds of the extra frame, when Humboldt’s Kendall Clark went to the free throw line.
Brian Peters on the call as the pair of free throws from Clark gave Humboldt the 68-67 win. Free throw shooting was the difference in the game, Humboldt was 14 of 17 and SCC was 11 of 20. Riley Batta led the Titans with a game high 26, Kylie Schliesman had 12 and Emma Anderson added 11. Bae Arnold led Humboldt with a team high 25 and Kendall Clark had 16.
The boys game would be much less dramatic as South Central Calhoun cruised 72-55. Titans used a big 2nd quarter outscoring Humboldt 15-7 in the frame to lead 31-17 at the break. Brennan Holder led the way for SCC with a game high 28 on five made 3’s, Cole Corey and Josh Dietrich both had 14 each. Caden Matson led Humboldt with 14.
On “92 Rock” Fort Dodge was swept at Ankeny Centenntial. The Jags came in ranked 4th in both the girls and boys latest polls. In the girls game, Dodgers started slow and found themselves in a 23-4 hole after the 1st. They would fall 65-24 as turnovers hurt the Dodgers and Centennial was able to convert them into buckets. Maggie Phipps had a game 15 for Centennial and Lizzie Strom had a baker’s dozen. Tory Bennett led Fort Dodge with 6.
The Boys game was a similar story as the Jags opened on a 13-3 run to lead by 19 after the 1st. They would cruise to an 80-34 win. A nice bright spot for Fort Dodge came in the form of Tristan Bockoven who had a season high 8 points, Carson Peterson had 9. Jags had four players in double figures led by Caden Kelling with a game high 15 off the bench. Dodgers are back in action Friday hosting rival Marshalltown.
