Humboldt Coach Derrick Elman Talks 1st Round Playoff Game

Humboldt Football is having a tremendous turnaround this year, the wildcats had their 1st winning regular season since 2014. Coach Derrick Elman is in just his 3rd season at the helm and has had a full “buy in” from his players. The Wildcats will host a playoff game for the 1st time in 6 years as they welcome in Sioux City-Bishop Heelan. Coach Elman says his guys were “fired up” when they found out.

The Wildcats are 4-3 this year with losses to undefeated Webster City, Ballard and to Gilbert last week on a last second Field Goal. In two of those losses Humboldt was held under 100 yards rushing, in their wins they averaged 180 yards rushing. Elman says the run game is a major key to victory in this 1st round playoff game.

The leader on defense for Sioux City-Bishop Heelan is D-End Carter Weiland who comes in with 5 sacks and 12 tackles for loss on the season.

Coach Elman says the message to his team this week has been about seizing the opportunity they have earned.

Humboldt hosts Sioux City-Heelan Friday Night at 7 PM. Hear Derrick Elman’s reaction to Friday’s game  on the “Hy-Vee Fort Dodge Coaches Corner” Saturday Morning on “Sunny” 99.7 at 9 AM.
