Iowa Central Falls Just Short To Iowa Western In Top 10 Showdown
Iowa Central fell to Iowa Western 34-20 in a top 10 match up Saturday at Dodger Stadium. The Tritons struggled on offense managing just 3 points in the 1st half. They trailed 13-3 at the halftime break.
The Tritons fought back in the 3rd, as Aniik Mckenzie took the 2nd half’s opening kickoff back 95 yards for a TD. Iowa Central then took their lone lead of the game later in the 3rd, when QB Brady Pope found WR Savion Johnson for an 18 yard TD pass. Iowa Central then led 17-13.
Iowa Western answered with a TD pass from QB Nate Glantz to RB Zion Guerra to re-take the lead 20-17. The Tritons put together a 10 play drive on the ensuing possession that was capped by a 24 yard Colin Swygman FG to tie it at 20.
Iowa Western would then hit on a big play, a 66 yard TD strike from Glantz to WR Michael Love to go up 27-20. The Iowa Central offense had two possession in the final few minutes, but were unable to get anything going. A “pick 6” by Iowa Western LB Jacob Ellis in the final seconds sealed the deal at 34-20.
For Iowa Central, Savion Johnson had 5 catches for 58 yards and their lone offensive TD. The Iowa Central offense was held to less than 200 total yards. Iowa Western racked up over 400 yards of total offense.
The Iowa Central defense bent but didn’t break. While they allowed over 400 yards they allowed just two offensive TD’s in the game. The Triton Defense forced two fumbles, an interception, a turnover on downs and had a goal line stand to keep Iowa Central in it. The Triton offense just was unable to do enough to get them over the hump.
Iowa Central is now 1-1 on the season. They’ll host Grandview University’s JV team this Saturday at Dodger Stadium.
