Drake Coach Darian DeVries now joins other NCAA coaches who coach or have coached their sons. DeVries will join another in state coach in Fran McCaffery, who coaches his sons currently. While it is certainly not unheard of or unprecedented, it still brings about challenges. DeVries got to see up close what it was like to coach your son while serving as an assistant at Creighton. Doug McDermott was a three time All-American and the national player of the year in 2014 while playing for his father, Greg. Darian’s son Tucker joins the Bulldog program after leading Waukee High School to the Iowa 4A state championship.
Coach DeVries views it as a unique opportunity.
He feels the key to the situation and finding balance will be to treat his son Tucker like any other player.
Tucker DeVries comes in to his freshman season, as one of the most heralded recruits for the program in recent history. He was rated as a 3-star prospect by most scouting services nationwide and was a top 100 recruit in the 2021 class, per 247 sports. Tucker chose to play for his dad, declining offers from Creighton, Iowa State, Florida and Air Force.
