All year long, is has looked like all roads in the 1A Girls State Basketball Tournament were leading to a rematch for the State Title. #1 Bishop Garrigan and #2 Newell-Fonda have been on a collision course since meeting for in the State Finals last season. The Mustangs took that game after a furious comeback late to claim back-to-back State Titles. The two teams met in the regular season in December with Garrigan winning decisively.
Both teams are in action in the State Semifinals on Friday in Des Moines. Garrigan will take on Exira-EHK at 2 PM. The Golden Bears clawed their way to a 48-42 win the Quarterfinals on Wednesday 48-42 over Springville. They will look to advance to their second straight appearance in the State Finals. However, standing in the way is an undefeated Exira-EHK squad that features three players who average 13 or more on the season. Bishop Garrigan will lean on their ALl State tandem of D-1 recruit Audi Crooks and Molly Joyce.
#2 Newell-Fonda is in action in the other 1A Semifinal on Friday. They dismantled #7 Kingsley-Pierson on Wednesday 88-47. The Mustangs will take on #6 Montezuma, who knocked off #3 St. Ansgar on Wednesday. Montezuma Senior Elise Boulton had a mnonster game in that one pouring in a game high 29. Newell-Fonda has 4 players averaging double figures and as a team they average 81 per game. Newell-Fonda and Montezuma is set for Friday at 4 PM.
With wins on Friday, Newell-Fonda and Bishop Garrigan would meet in the 1A State Finals Saturday at 6:30 PM. It would be the epic rematch between two powerhouses, that basketball fans around Iowa have been waiting on all season.
