Newell-Fonda has claimed their 1st State Title in the tenure of Head Coach Courtney Darrow. The Mustangs got a 4-1 win over Lisbon, avenging losses to the Lions in the previous two State Tournaments. The Mustangs got on the board in the 1st with an RBI single from Maggie Walker. Lisbon would answer by manufacturing a run in the 4th. Newell-Fonda answered with a 2 run single from Mia Walker. Newell-Fonda Senior 1st Baseman Ella Larsen says the walker single was the turning point in the game.
The Mustangs added an insurance run in the 5th on a Mary Walker RBI single to score Larsen. Freshman Pitcher Kierra Jungers was masterful in the circle again, she went the distance scattering three hits and allowing one run. Jungers was 3-0 with three complete games and allowed a total of four runs in 21 innings. She was named All Tournament Team Captain. Jungers says her defense deserves much of the credit.
Larsen had two hits in the Title game, she says after being at State four years in a row, to finally breakthrough is huge for the team and the Newell-Fonda community.
The win pushes Newell-Fonda’s record to 38-4 on the season and 91-14 under Coach Courtney Darrow.
