It was a highly anticipated rematch in the Class 1A Girls State Title Game. Newell-Fonda was able to get retribution after a regular season loss to Bishop Garrigan. The Mustangs led all night and went on to win it 66-52. That makes three straight State Titles for Newell-Fonda.
Newell-Fonda opened the game with a 7-2 run and led 18-10 after the 1st. They would build on that led to take a 33-20 advantage into the half. Garrigan would claw back taking the 3rd quarter 16-10 and trailed 43-36 heading into the 4th. Garrigan would cut the lead down to 5 on multiple occassions but that would be as close as they would come. Newell-Fonda took the title after outscoring Garrigan 25-14 in the 4th.
Newell-Fonda’s patented pressure worked as designed, they sped Garrigan up and forced 21 turnovers. The Mustangs committed just 8 turnovers. The battle of the boards was where many expected Garrigan to have an advantage, but that wasn’t the case. Newell-Fonda won the offensive glass 18-6.
D-1 recruit Audi Crooks had a herculean effort in the loss, recording yet another double-double of 25 points and 10 boards. Macy Sievers led Newell-Fonda with 17 points and 7 boards and Bailey Sievers added 14. Crooks and teammate Molly Joyce were named All Tournament for Garrigan. Bailey Sievers was an All Tournament selection and Macy Sievers was named Captain.
The Mustangs have now won two straight against Garrigan in the State Finals. Newell-Fonda was able to dictate the tempo and had a solid defensive game plan. The Mustangs hounded Garrigan’s 2nd leading scorer Molly Joyce and was able to hold her to 8 points, which is well below her season average. Newell-Fonda played 13 players in the game and 9 of them scored.
While Garrigan’s win in the regular season broke an incredibly long win streak for Newell-Fonda, it never broke their stride or focus.
